Raymond E. Spaid 1930-2014

Raymond E. Spaid, 83, husband of Beverly J. (Thomas) Spaid, Oak Rd., Trappe, died Friday, January 17th, in Seasons Hospice At Phoenixville Hospital.
Ray was born on September 6, 1930, in Bloomsburg, and was a son of the late Robert A. and Ethel R. (Larish) Spaid. He was a graduate of Bloomsburg High School and later earned an associates degree from Villanova University. He served as a Boiler Tender 3rd Class aboard the USS Brownson (DD868), during the Korean War.
In 1981, Ray retired as a captain of the guard, at the State Correctional Institution at Graterford, where he worked for 25 years. He sold real estate for Paul Henry Real Estate and Starkey Realty, and owned a soil percolation test business. He also worked for and drove school buses for the late J.O. Sacks, Trappe, and repaired small engines for late J. Ervin Shainline, at the Powerhouse, Collegeville. During his retirement he worked at Renninger’s Market, Perkiomen Twp.
Ray was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, where he was a former member of the praise band, past president of the church council, chairman of the cemetery committee, and member of the property and hospitality committees. He was a past commander of Kline-Styer-McCann Post #7155, Trappe, a past commander of Roy S. Leidy Post #203, Schwenksville, a member of the USS Brownson Reunion Assn., a member of board of directors of the Trappe Historical Society, an asst. scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #113, Trappe, a member of Keystone Grange #2, Trappe, a member of the Trappe Fire Co., and a member of the Skip-Perk Jaycees. He was a member of the planning commission, member of the auxiliary police, and judge of elections for the Borough Of Trappe. He enjoyed hunting and trapping, and was a member of the Pike Twp. Sportsmen’s Assn. He and his wife loved to travel, be with friends, and go dancing.
In addition to his wife of 58 years, Ray is survived by his children, Raelene Gorlinsky, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Suzanne, wife of J.B. Braden, Driftwood, Texas, Deborah Parker, East Coventry Twp., and Scott, husband of Beth (Renninger) Spaid, Bally; his grandchildren, Jonathon Gorlinsky, Brian Parker, Sarah (Braden), wife of Joshua Gray, and James Braden; and his brother, Richard E., husband of Joan (Parker) Spaid, Bloomsburg.
